Tensions rose at the Munshipara border in Dahagram Union of Patgram Upazila, Lalmonirhat, after the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) attempted to construct barbed-wire fencing. Upon receiving information, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) intervened and protested, forcing the BSF to halt their activities.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon near pillar number 8/41 along the zero line. Reports indicate that BSF personnel from the Arun Camp of India’s Raninnagar 6 Battalion initiated the construction of a barbed-wire fence within India’s territory adjacent to the zero line. Reacting promptly, a BGB patrol team from the Panbari camp under the Rangpur 51 Battalion arrived at the scene. Following BGB’s strong objections, the BSF stopped the work and withdrew. Local residents reported seeing BSF personnel attempting to erect fencing approximately three feet high across a half-kilometer stretch along the zero line. The situation drew the attention of locals, who also gathered to witness the events.
Jamil Ahmed, the company commander of Panbari BGB, stated that increased vigilance and patrols are being maintained along the border. According to international border agreements, no structures can be built within 150 yards of the zero line by either country. Earlier, a similar incident took place at the Bastabar border in Naogaon, where the BSF tried to erect a fence within 150 yards of the zero line but was stopped following BGB protests.
Meanwhile, tensions at the Chowka border in Shibganj, Chapainawabganj, have eased after BSF and BGB agreed during a meeting that the BSF would refrain from constructing roads or fences without prior approval. The 59 BGB Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Golam Kibria, confirmed that the situation in this area is stable, with BGB continuing regular patrols. However, gatherings of curious locals near the border remain a concern, and BGB is working to manage the situation.
