First trade deal with Bangladesh after Trump’s inauguration

The Bangladeshi government has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the U.S. administration, marking the first agreement between the two nations since Donald Trump’s inauguration for his second term on January 21. Ashiq Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), shared this on Facebook on Saturday morning, January 25.
He mentioned that the deal is centered on Trump’s new energy export mandate, which aligns with his popular election slogan, “Drill, baby, drill.” This agreement makes Bangladesh the first country to sign a deal under Trump’s second term. Chowdhury highlighted the country’s severe gas crisis and the necessity of securing a long-term supply for industrial growth and employment. He added that sourcing gas from the U.S. presents an intriguing alternative to the Middle East.
Emphasizing the diplomatic importance of this agreement, Chowdhury stated that Trump’s administration values direct action over rhetoric. He also shared an anecdote about being warmly received by Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy during the signing. According to Chowdhury, this partnership positions Bangladesh as a key ally in Trump’s “America First” agenda, which aligns with Bangladesh’s interests.
Previously, Bangladesh signed a major LNG supply agreement with Louisiana-based Argent LNG, committing to purchase 5 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually under the deal.
