Gunfire targets anti-discrimination students in Gazipur by motorcycle assailant

A shooting incident targeting anti-discrimination student protesters took place in the Bhawal Rajbari area of Gazipur on Saturday around 6:30 PM. Mobassher Hossain, a student, was injured in the attack. Leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement alleged that members of the ruling Awami League were responsible for the shooting.

 

According to one of the movement’s leaders, a motorcycle-riding individual approached from the Jor Pukurpar area, fired shots, and fled the scene. The injured student, Mobassher Hossain, is the son of Ali Ahmed from Harinal Dakshinpara in Gazipur Metropolitan.

 

Gazipur Metropolitan Sadar Police Station’s duty officer, ASI Samiul Islam, confirmed the incident, stating that a motorcycle rider carried out the attack before escaping. The injured student was admitted to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital.

 

Dr. Md. Monzur Morshed from the hospital informed journalists that the victim sustained a gunshot wound in his right arm. He received initial treatment and was placed under observation in the surgery department.

 

The incident follows an attack and vandalism at the residence of former Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque in Dhirashram Dakshinkhan, Gazipur, on Friday night around 10 PM. A clash ensued between local Awami League members and agitated residents, leaving at least 15 people injured. Several critically wounded individuals were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, with three in serious condition.

 

In response, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens’ Committee called for a protest rally at Bhawal Rajbari Field at noon on Saturday. The event was organized by the Gazipur district and metropolitan branches of these groups.

 

Key attendees included Anti-Discrimination Student Movement convener Hasnat Abdullah, National Citizens’ Committee lead organizer Sarjis Alam, advocate Sakib, central committee member M. Soyaib, National Citizens’ Committee central organizer advocate Ali Naser Khan, along with Gazipur Metropolitan Gacha Thana Unit member Master Anisur Rahman, Kaliakoir Unit member Suman Bari, and central committee member Nabir Yusuf.
