A new political party, led by student leaders from the mass uprising, is set to be launched on Friday at 3 PM on Manik Mia Avenue in front of the National Parliament. The organizers aim to gather hundreds of thousands of supporters for the event. However, the party’s name and organizational structure have not been finalized yet.

On Monday, at a press conference held at the central office of the National Citizens’ Committee in Banglamotor, chief organizer Sarjis Alam made the announcement. Other key leaders, including Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, anti-discrimination student movement representative Arif Sohel, and organizer Abdul Hannan Masud, were also present.

Akhtar Hossain stated that an official announcement regarding the convening committee would be made by February 28. He emphasized that leadership decisions are being made based on internal discussions and consensus, with future party leaders to be elected through direct voting at the party council.

The press conference highlighted internal conflicts over key leadership positions. While names such as Nahid Islam and Akhtar Hossain are being strongly considered for top roles, debates continue over other positions. A late-night internal meeting even proposed replacing Nahid Islam with Mahfuz Alam as the party’s head, but the proposal was not accepted. The majority still supports Nahid Islam for the top position.

The party’s convening committee will be announced on the launch day, with roles such as Convener, Member Secretary, Chief Organizer, Spokesperson, Joint Conveners, and Joint Member Secretaries. Despite internal disputes, all involved leaders are expected to be included in the committee. Leaders like Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, Nasiruddin Patwari, and several others will be given roles in the new political structure.

Meanwhile, Ali Ahsan Junayed and Rafey Salman Rifat, two prominent student leaders, have traveled to China on a 13-day visit at the invitation of the Communist Party of China. They, along with Hasnat Abdullah, will not be present at the launch event. Nasiruddin Patwari’s absence from the press conference also raised speculation, though no official reason was given.

As part of their preparation, the party conducted a public survey titled “Your Vision for a New Bangladesh.” Over 200,000 people participated online, and another 50,000 contributed offline. Survey results indicated that the public’s main concerns include eradicating corruption, ensuring good governance, preventing abuse of power, and promoting social justice. Many also called for an inclusive leadership structure, democratic practices within the party, and opposition to authoritarian and dynastic politics.

The formation of this party follows the events of August 5, when the mass uprising forced Sheikh Hasina to flee the country. The leaders believe that after such a historical event, the people’s aspirations must be met with a fresh political movement. Over the past six months, the anti-discrimination student movement has mobilized youth activists, while the National Citizens’ Committee has engaged intellectuals and civil society figures. The new political party is seen as the culmination of this effort, aiming to shape the future of Bangladesh with an inclusive and reformist agenda.
