Bangladesh is observing National Voter’s Day today, March 2, with the theme “In Our Bangladesh, We Vote Together.” The Election Commission (EC) has officially announced the updated voter list for 2024, revealing a total of 123,732,274 registered voters. Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin shared this information at the inauguration ceremony of the event.

National Voter’s Day has been observed since March 2, 2018, to raise awareness about voting rights and democracy. The initiative includes rallies, discussions, and awareness campaigns at the national, district, and upazila levels. According to a report signed by SM Asaduzzaman, Director General of the Election Institute, various programs have been arranged across the country.

Initially, in April 2018, the Cabinet decided to observe National Voter’s Day annually on March 1. However, the date was later changed to March 2 from 2029 onwards. The Election Commission has already completed all necessary preparations for this year’s celebration.

The central event will take place at the EC Secretariat in Dhaka. At 9 AM, the Chief Election Commissioner will officially inaugurate the day in front of the Election Commission building, followed by a colorful rally. An official discussion on voter rights will be held at 11 AM in the EC auditorium, where the Chief Election Commissioner will attend as the chief guest.

A press release stated that 10 coordinators from anti-discrimination movements, representatives from the European Union and UNDP, and members of civil society, including observers, have been invited to the discussion. National newspapers are publishing special supplements, and Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast talk shows highlighting the significance of the day. Similar programs, including rallies and discussion sessions, are being organized by district, upazila, and regional election offices across the country, according to EC Public Relations Officer Md. Ashadul Haque.
