Military officers’ magistracy powers extended for another 60 days

The government of Bangladesh has extended the special executive magistrate powers of commissioned officers in the armed forces, including army captains and above, as well as those of equivalent rank serving on deputation in the Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), for another two months.
A notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday announced that this authority would remain in effect for 60 days from March 15. According to the notification, under the Criminal Procedure Code of 1898, these commissioned officers are granted special executive magistrate powers, allowing them to take necessary actions under various sections, including 64, 65, 83, 84, 86, 95(2), 100, 105, 107, 109, 110, 126, 127, 128, 130, 133, and 142.
The decision to grant magistracy powers to military officers was first implemented on September 17 last year to maintain law and order. Shortly after, on September 30, naval and air force officers were also granted similar authority. The most recent extension was made through a notification on November 15, which also included military officers serving in the Coast Guard and BGB.
