United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Bangladesh for a four-day visit at the invitation of Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He landed in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon, where he was received at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain.

This marks Guterres’ second visit to Bangladesh in nearly seven years, with a primary focus on the Rohingya refugee crisis and human rights issues.

According to officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Friday morning, the Secretary-General will first meet with Foreign Affairs Adviser Hossain and Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s Special Representative on Rohingya issues. He will then hold discussions with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at his office. Following the meeting, both Guterres and Yunus will travel together to Cox’s Bazar on a Bangladesh Biman flight to visit the Rohingya refugee camps. Various UN agencies working in the camps will brief the Secretary-General on their ongoing efforts. Later in the day, Guterres will break his fast with at least 100,000 Rohingya refugees in a show of solidarity during the holy month of Ramadan. That evening, he and Yunus will return to Dhaka.

On Saturday, Guterres will visit the United Nations office in Dhaka to engage with UN staff. Later, he will return to his hotel for a roundtable discussion with youth representatives and civil society members. That evening, Chief Adviser Yunus will host an iftar and dinner in his honor. The Secretary-General is scheduled to depart Bangladesh on the morning of March 16.

Notably, his previous visit to Bangladesh took place in July 2018.
