UN Secretary-General in Ukhiya, interacts with Rohingya children

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, currently on a visit to Bangladesh, has arrived at the Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. He is participating in various programs throughout the day. Traveling on the same flight, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus also reached Cox’s Bazar with him.

 

Their chartered Bangladesh Airlines flight landed at Cox’s Bazar Airport at 12:48 PM on Friday. Faruq E Azam, Advisor to the Ministry of Disaster Management, welcomed them at the airport.

 

According to the Chief Advisor’s press division, after completing formalities at the airport, the UN Secretary-General proceeded to the Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, arriving there at 2:10 PM. His schedule includes visiting a Rohingya learning center, a cultural hub, and a jute product manufacturing center. Later, he will join nearly 100,000 Rohingya refugees for iftar.

 

Meanwhile, Dr. Yunus inaugurated a project at Cox’s Bazar Airport and visited the Khurushkul Climate Refugee Center before joining Guterres for iftar with the Rohingya refugees. According to BSS, both leaders will return to Dhaka together in the evening after the visit and iftar.

 

Earlier in the day, Dr. Yunus also inspected two sites of the under-construction international airport in Cox’s Bazar. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAAB) briefed him on the progress, stating that 95% of the construction is complete and the remaining work is expected to finish by December this year. Once operational, the airport is expected to handle 40-50 aircraft movements daily.

 

Cox’s Bazar District Police spokesperson Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Jasim Uddin Chowdhury confirmed that the Special Security Force (SSF) is overseeing security arrangements, with multiple layers of security in place for the visit.
