The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has affirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in its peace and dialogue process. He emphasized that the international community should back Bangladesh’s efforts toward a just, inclusive, and prosperous future, as the country stands at a crucial juncture. Guterres assured that the UN will remain a reliable partner in building a sustainable and equitable future alongside the people of Bangladesh.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Foreign Affairs Advisor Tawhid Hossain at a hotel in Dhaka on Saturday, Guterres stated, “Bangladesh is undergoing significant reforms and transformations. I want to assure you that the UN is always ready to assist in promoting peace, national dialogue, trust, and solidarity.”
Expressing his satisfaction in standing with Bangladesh during this critical period, Guterres said, “Under the leadership of Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus, the country is going through important changes, and the people aspire for a new future based on democracy, justice, and prosperity.”
Regarding the Rohingya issue, the UN Secretary-General expressed deep concern over the worsening situation in Myanmar. “Violence and human rights violations in Rakhine State and across Myanmar continue to cause civilian casualties and displacement, both internally and across borders,” he noted.
Guterres urged all parties in Myanmar to exercise maximum restraint, prioritize civilian protection under international humanitarian law, and prevent further escalation of communal tensions and violence.
Before the press conference, he engaged in discussions with members of the National Consensus Commission, political leaders, youth representatives, and civil society to understand their perspectives on reforms and aspirations for Bangladesh’s future.
Highlighting the significance of Ramadan, Guterres remarked, “This holy month reminds us of universal values such as compassion, empathy, and generosity. Bangladesh has exemplified these values through its commitment to peace, development, and humanitarian support.”
