Former former IGP Mamun’s remand extended due to excessive talking

In a murder case at Jatrabari Police Station, a Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for former IGP Choudhury Abdullah Al Mamun. The decision was made after a hearing by Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza on Wednesday. During the hearing, Mamun expressed frustration with his lawyer for speaking too much, stating that excessive talk had extended his remand. Police had requested a seven-day remand, while Mamun’s lawyer, Mohammad Abbas, sought the cancellation of the remand. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki argued for the remand, mentioning that Mamun, though elderly and ill, had previously been on remand for 85 days. The court ultimately approved a four-day remand. Mamun was arrested on September 3 by the DB police, and he has been remanded several times since then. The case concerns the death of Mohammad Sayem Hossain, who was killed on July 19 last year during a student protest against discrimination, when he was shot by police and Awami League members at the Mayor Hanif Flyover Toll Plaza. His mother, Shiuli Akhter, filed a murder case on August 27.
