Dhaka University has formed two new committees to identify all attackers involved in the July uprising and to investigate whether any faculty members indirectly encouraged the violence. The university administration has stated that those responsible will face expulsion, and if any student’s enrollment is revoked, their academic certificates will be canceled.

Additionally, if any outsiders were involved in the attack, their respective educational institutions and local authorities will ensure proper punishment. Experts emphasize that no guilty party should escape justice, while innocent students must not be wrongfully penalized.

The July uprising saw brutal attacks on students, including women, on the Dhaka University campus. A fact-finding committee was initially formed to investigate, and their recent report identified 128 individuals, including banned Chhatra League central president Saddam Hossain, general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan, and university unit president Mazharul Kabir Shoyon, who were found to have ordered and participated in the violence.

However, students question why the report does not provide a full account of all perpetrators, suspecting the number of attackers to be higher. In response, the university administration has launched further investigations to ensure all offenders are identified. Another committee has been set up to determine whether any faculty members had a role in instigating the violence.

Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed stated that punishments will be determined based on the severity of the crime, and offenders may face expulsion. If any student’s enrollment is revoked, their degree certificate may also be canceled. For attackers from other institutions, their respective administrations will take disciplinary action.

Similar disciplinary measures have been taken at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) and Jahangirnagar University against students and faculty members involved in the July movement attacks.

Criminal analyst Dr. Touhidul Haque stressed the need for a transparent investigation to ensure exemplary punishment for offenders while protecting the innocent from wrongful penalties.

Experts also advise university authorities to address issues like housing shortages and other student grievances to prevent student organizations from exploiting these concerns for violent purposes.
