Myanmar Agrees to Take Back 180,000 Rohingya from Bangladesh

Myanmar has agreed to repatriate 180,000 Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh in the first phase, out of the 800,000 currently taking shelter in the country. This was confirmed on Friday, April 4, in a statement from the Press Wing of the Chief Advisor’s Office.
According to the statement, Myanmar authorities have informed Bangladesh that they have verified and identified 180,000 Rohingya as eligible for return from the list provided by Bangladesh. The original list was submitted in six phases between 2018 and 2020.
An additional 70,000 Rohingya are still under review, awaiting further verification of names and photographs.
The development was shared during a meeting in Bangkok on the sidelines of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, where Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister U Than Shwe met with Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh’s high representative of the Chief Advisor.
This marks the first formal confirmation from Myanmar regarding a verified list of Rohingya for repatriation—seen as a significant step toward a long-term resolution of the crisis. Myanmar also assured that the verification of the remaining 550,000 Rohingya on the original list would be completed swiftly.
During the meeting, Bangladesh expressed deep sympathy for the victims of the recent earthquake in Myanmar and affirmed its readiness to send further humanitarian aid if needed.
