Two key motifs created for the Dhaka University Faculty of Fine Arts’ Pohela Boishakh procession were damaged in a fire, one of which was a giant effigy symbolizing authoritarianism, widely believed to represent former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The fire reportedly occurred in the early hours of April 12. Cultural activist and filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki took to Facebook the following day, accusing allies of the former premier of orchestrating the arson.

Farooki stated that the burning of the symbolic structure was a deliberate act to silence artistic resistance and curb public unity during the traditional New Year celebrations. He emphasized that whether the culprits belong to the ruling party’s “soft wing” or a covert faction, all involved must face legal consequences. He called on citizens to remain united and participate in the celebration in greater numbers, noting that the destructive act only solidifies the importance of showcasing the effigy as a symbol of protest.

Another motif, a dove representing peace, was also partially burned. While authorities have confirmed the incident, no suspects have been officially identified. Alumni and students suspect foul play linked to individuals with past ties to the previous government.

The destroyed 20-foot bamboo structure was intended to be the central feature of this year’s procession. The artwork depicted a monstrous face with horn-like extensions—intended to criticize oppressive rule. The university administration and law enforcement are currently investigating the matter.
