Tribunal Proceedings Begin Against Police in Ashulia Killing and Body Burning Case

Three former police officers have been produced before the International Crimes Tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity in connection with the brutal incident of burning bodies during the student protests in July-August in Ashulia, Savar. On the morning of April 15, they were presented before the tribunal. The accused are former Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) of Dhaka District Md. Abdullahil Kafi, former Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Md. Shahidul Islam, and former Detective Branch Inspector Md. Arafat Hossain. Earlier, on April 8, the tribunal, led by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, ordered their appearance in response to a prosecution petition. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tazul Islam, along with prosecutors Gazi Monowar Hossain and B.M. Sultan Mahmud, were present during the hearing. Prosecutor Tazul Islam had earlier told reporters on December 26 that on August 5, six young men were shot dead in Ashulia, and their bodies were burned in a police van set on fire by officers. Shockingly, one of the victims was reportedly still alive when petrol was poured on him and he was set ablaze.
