Experts believe that the interim government is on the right track in strengthening diplomatic ties not only with the United States but also with neighboring countries. They have advised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to continue its cautious and measured approach, especially in light of recent visits by American and Pakistani diplomats.

Last week, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretaries Nicole Chulick and Andrew Herrup visited Dhaka on a three-day trip, marking the first high-level engagement from the second Trump administration. During the visit, they held meetings with senior officials, including the Foreign Secretary, Foreign Affairs Adviser, and Chief Adviser. Although Dhaka did not offer an immediate response to recent tariff-related issues, it requested 90 days to respond, signaling a deliberate and thoughtful diplomatic stance that experts have praised.

Meanwhile, on August 5, Bangladesh and Pakistan held their first Foreign Secretary-level meeting in 15 years, indicating Islamabad’s renewed interest in improving ties. Discussions covered not only diplomatic matters but also cooperation in trade, education, agriculture, and cultural exchanges. However, some observers question whether closer ties with Pakistan might affect Bangladesh’s delicate relationship with India.

International affairs analyst Asif Munir stated that Bangladesh is pursuing a smart strategy in strengthening its foreign relations. He noted that while the U.S. has voiced concerns, Bangladesh has taken time to respond with care, avoiding immediate rejections and maintaining diplomatic channels through its embassy in Washington.

He also remarked that the interim government is striking a balance between engaging both India and Pakistan in ways that protect Bangladesh’s interests without provoking either neighbor—an approach that could shape future foreign policy directions.

Former Ambassador Humayun Kabir added that Bangladesh is becoming more self-aware in its foreign policy, seeking to restructure ties based on mutual respect and equality. He believes normalization of relations with Pakistan should not cause India alarm, as long as national interest remains the guiding principle. However, he emphasized the importance of considering India’s proximity and influence in any diplomatic move.

Experts further suggest that Bangladesh’s proactive engagement with all South Asian countries, including Myanmar, could bring long-term diplomatic and strategic benefits.
