Chief Advisor’s Special Assistant for Posts, Telecommunications, and IT, Fayez Ahmad Tayyab, announced a reduction in internet prices across three key infrastructure levels. In a Facebook post on Monday (April 21), he stated that Fiber@Home management has confirmed a 10% price cut at the International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) level, another 10% at the International Internet Gateway (IIG) level, and a 15% reduction at the National Transmission level (NTTN).

He also mentioned that earlier, the ISP Association guaranteed that customers would now get 10 Mbps internet for BDT 500 instead of the previous 5 Mbps. Prior to that, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd. had already reduced internet prices by 10% for all IIGs and ISPs, with an additional 10% discount for wholesale users—totaling a 20% reduction at the international gateway level.

These measures are part of a broader effort to reduce internet prices across three to four licensing layers. However, only the country’s three private mobile service providers have yet to announce price reductions. Fayez pointed out that the government has already provided these companies with DWDM and dark fiber facilities, leaving no valid reason for them to delay reducing mobile internet prices.

He emphasized that the government has extended policy support to MNOs, and wholesale internet prices have been reduced through public-private collaboration at both the international and national levels. Now, it is the mobile operators’ turn to participate in this national initiative. He expressed hope that lowering mobile internet prices could help slightly ease the ongoing inflation.
