Delay in Rohingya Repatriation Will Deepen the Crisis

Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has warned that prolonged displacement is deepening despair among the Rohingya refugees, leading many into criminal activities. Without swift repatriation, he cautioned, the entire region risks becoming destabilized. Speaking at a roundtable discussion in Doha, Qatar, during the second day of the Earthna Summit on April 23, he described the Rohingya crisis as more than a humanitarian issue—it is a complex challenge with social, economic, political, and environmental dimensions.
He noted that international funding for humanitarian aid to the Rohingya has decreased, further complicating the crisis. Dr. Yunus reiterated that Bangladesh sees sustainable repatriation as the only viable solution and emphasized that ongoing crimes against the Rohingya, including ethnic cleansing and human rights abuses, must not go unpunished. He expressed support for the proceedings against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice and suggested that justice could help rebuild trust among Rohingya refugees to return to Rakhine.
Bangladesh is set to host a high-level UN-backed conference in New York this September focused on the Rohingya issue, and Dr. Yunus called on Qatar to actively participate. He also urged Doha to play a leading role in mobilizing OIC member states to increase international pressure for a resolution and appealed to the global community to move beyond symbolic gestures and take concrete action toward repatriation.
