Commission Aims to Build a Roadmap Through National Charter: Dr. Ali Riaz

Professor Dr. Ali Riaz, Vice Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, stated that the commission’s objective is to draft a national charter through dialogue with all parties—one that will be widely accepted and serve as a blueprint for Bangladesh’s future. He made the remarks on Thursday, April 24, ahead of a meeting between the commission and the newly-formed Bangladesh A-Am Janata Party, held at the National Parliament.
Dr. Riaz emphasized that over the past 53 years, the country’s governance structure has suffered from a lack of democracy, leading to authoritarian and fascist regimes. He expressed a shared aspiration among the people to establish a democratic state that would prevent the return of fascism and ensure that no one has to sacrifice their life for democracy again.
He noted that over the last 16 years, various groups—including students, political parties, and pro-democracy citizens—have united in their struggle against fascist rule.
The Bangladesh A-Am Janata Party, led by former Destiny Group managing director Mohammad Rafiqul Amin, officially launched on April 17. At the time, Amin, serving as the party’s convener, read out its manifesto and announced a nine-point agenda. Fatima Tasnim, formerly of the Gono Adhikar Parishad, has taken on the role of member secretary. The party has also declared a central committee comprising 297 members.
