Although Bangladesh’s national parliamentary elections are approaching, the army has yet to receive any official deployment orders from the government. However, the military remains fully prepared to take on election-related responsibilities if instructed. This was confirmed by Colonel Md. Shafiqul Islam from the Military Operations Directorate during a press briefing held at the Dhaka Cantonment on Thursday (June 19).
When asked whether the army is making election preparations following government discussions with political parties—which indicated that the election could take place in February—Colonel Shafiqul Islam clarified that no formal directive has been issued so far. He emphasized that the army will carry out any election duties once officially tasked by the authorities.
Responding to a question about the army’s stance on mob violence, he stated that the military has taken firm action against such incidents and has significantly reduced occurrences. Referring to a recent event in Rangpur, he said the army’s timely intervention helped bring the situation under control.
Addressing the army’s involvement during Eid-ul-Azha, Colonel Shafiqul Islam expressed satisfaction with their operations. He highlighted that army personnel provided round-the-clock patrols at key transport hubs, including bus, rail, and launch terminals. Security checkpoints were set up at sensitive locations to regulate vehicle speed. Both male and female officers actively participated in these operations. Through their efforts, over 3.5 million Bangladeshi Taka was recovered and returned to passengers from more than 1,255 vehicles. He credited this success to the army’s dedication, sincerity, integrity, and hard work.
He further noted that the number of deaths and serious injuries during this Eid holiday was reduced by 30 to 40 percent compared to previous years.
Regarding a recent incident where a flag seller was beaten during an international football match, the colonel described it as an unfortunate and isolated event. He mentioned that the army later contacted the individual, expressed sympathy, and provided financial support of one lakh Taka to help him continue his business.
When questioned about pushbacks along the India and Myanmar borders, Colonel Shafiqul Islam said that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Coast Guard are currently handling the situation with increased patrols and intelligence monitoring in those areas. For now, the army’s direct involvement is not deemed necessary.
In response to questions about recent arrests of top criminals, the colonel stated that the army maintains confidentiality in such operations and will continue efforts to apprehend high-profile targets as part of their ongoing security operations.
