The deadline for political parties to apply for registration ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election ends today, Sunday (June 22). Once registered with the Election Commission (EC), parties will be eligible to contest the election using their designated symbols. Independent candidates outside of party nominations will also have the opportunity to participate.
The EC initially invited applications from interested parties on March 10, setting the original deadline for April 20. However, following requests from several parties, including the National Citizens Party (NCP), the deadline was extended by two more months.
To qualify for registration, new parties must meet several conditions: they must maintain an active central office, have an effective committee in at least one-third of the country’s administrative districts, and provide documented support from a minimum of 200 voters in at least 100 upazilas or metropolitan police stations.
After receiving the applications, the Election Commission will review and verify whether the requirements have been met. Parties that fulfill all the conditions will be granted registration certificates along with their electoral symbols. Currently, there are 50 registered political parties with the EC.
