The government has officially declared August 8 as “New Bangladesh Day,” marking the formation of the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus following the fall of the Awami League regime through a mass student and public uprising. Additionally, July 16 has been designated as “Shaheed Abu Sayeed Day” in remembrance of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University who was killed by police gunfire in Rangpur during an anti-discrimination student movement. The Cabinet Division issued separate circulars on Wednesday (June 25) announcing these two commemorative days. All relevant ministries, departments, and agencies have been requested to observe the days annually with due importance. Both dates have been classified under category ‘B’ in the Cabinet Division’s guidelines for national and international observances.
