The football world is mourning the tragic death of Portuguese and Liverpool star Diogo Jota, who reportedly died in a car accident alongside his younger brother, André Silva. Initial reports from Spanish outlet Marca claimed the crash occurred in Zamora province, Spain, but provided few details at the time.

Now, BBC Sports has revealed more about the incident. According to their report, the accident happened at around 12:30 p.m. local time. Jota and his 26-year-old brother were driving a Lamborghini at high speed when they attempted to overtake another vehicle. During the maneuver, one of the car’s tires reportedly burst, causing the vehicle to flip and catch fire. Neither of them could escape, and the car was completely engulfed in flames. Their identities were later confirmed through the vehicle’s license plate.

The crash occurred near the 65-kilometer mark of the A-52 highway in the Sanabria area of Zamora, as previously reported by Marca.

Just two weeks prior to the accident, the 28-year-old Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso. He had also recently helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League. Since his international debut in 2019, he had scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for the national team. While he was a notable presence in the Portuguese squad, he gained greater fame at Liverpool.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and played 123 matches for the club, scoring 47 goals. He was part of the team that won the Premier League title in the most recent season. Liverpool FC has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of its key players.
