A curfew has been imposed in Gopalganj following violence, clashes, and casualties surrounding a rally organized by the National Citizens’ Party (NCP). The curfew began at 8 PM on Wednesday, July 16, and will remain in effect until 6 PM on Thursday, July 17.
The announcement came earlier in the evening via a statement from the Chief Advisor’s press wing. According to the statement, the curfew was declared in response to escalating tensions and unrest in the area.
Violence erupted in the afternoon when NCP activists were attacked while traveling from Gopalganj to Madaripur. Although army and police personnel tried to bring the situation under control, they were overwhelmed by assaults allegedly carried out by members of the ruling Awami League and its affiliated organizations. As the situation worsened, four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed to reinforce security efforts.
During the attacks, several NCP leaders took refuge in the office of the Superintendent of Police in Gopalganj. They also issued a public call urging citizens to mobilize against what they described as “Awami terrorism.” With military assistance, the NCP leaders later evacuated the district safely.
Initially, the local administration imposed Section 144 to prohibit public gatherings. Later that night, the district authorities officially announced a 22-hour curfew in an effort to restore law and order.
