Jamaat Leader Dies in Tragic Highway Crash on Way to Dhaka

Maulana Abu Sayeed (52), the Amir (chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami in Dacope Upazila of Khulna, was killed after being struck by a passenger bus in Bhanga, Faridpur.

 

The fatal accident occurred around 3:00 AM on Saturday (July 19) on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Bhanga Municipality.

 

According to eyewitnesses and fellow Jamaat members, over 260 buses from Khulna were en route to the party’s national rally scheduled to be held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. Around 2:45 AM, several of the buses were parked at the Bhanga intersection, and passengers had gotten off to have tea.

 

Maulana Abu Sayeed reportedly noticed that the banner on his bus had come loose. As he and a few others tried to fix it, a speeding bus from Royal Paribahan slammed into him from behind. He died on the spot.

 

Bhanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ashraf Hossain confirmed the incident, stating that Maulana Abu Sayeed died at the scene, while seven others were injured. One of the injured remains in critical condition.
