Following the transfer of Sylhet Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad in connection with the stone looting controversy, the authorities have also reassigned Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Azizunnahar.
The order, signed by Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Khan Md Reza-un-Nabi, was issued on Monday evening. On the same day, a new DC was appointed for Sylhet.
Azizunnahar has been replaced by 36th BCS officer Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, who had been serving as the UNO of Fenchuganj. She will now take over his position in Fenchuganj.
According to local administration sources, the UNO faced severe criticism for her inability to prevent widespread illegal stone extraction in several areas, including Sada Pathor, Bunker, Bholaganj quarry, and Shah Arefin Tila.
The matter escalated after reports that nearly 80 percent of the stones at Sada Pathor—a site popular among both domestic and foreign tourists—had been unlawfully removed. Although these failures were not officially cited in the transfer order, the controversy is believed to have led to her reassignment.
Meanwhile, Md Sarwar Alam has been named the new Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet. Previously a deputy secretary attached to the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, he was also serving as personal secretary to the ministry’s adviser, Professor Asif Nazrul.
