Government Warns Media Against Airing Comments by Former Prime Minister

The government has issued a stern warning to television, print, and online media outlets, cautioning them against broadcasting or publishing statements, speeches, or audio clips from former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who faces criminal convictions and ongoing trials for crimes against humanity.

In a statement released Friday by the CA Press Wing, authorities said airing Hasina’s remarks would violate the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009 and a December directive from the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) that prohibits the dissemination of hate speech by former authoritarian leaders.

“We note with concern that some media outlets have disregarded legal directives by airing speeches containing false and inflammatory claims,” the statement said. “Those responsible are warned that any future violations will trigger immediate legal action.”

The government highlighted that Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh amid allegations of ordering mass killings during the July Uprising, and that she has been convicted by the ICT while remaining under trial for additional charges.

CA Press Wing also noted that the Awami League has been banned under Bangladeshi law, and anyone promoting the party or its leaders’ speeches could face prosecution under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The statement urged media organizations to exercise caution and responsibility, emphasizing that airing such messages — described as intended to incite violence and destabilize the nation — threatens the country’s democratic transition.

Violators, it added, “will be subject to legal action under Bangladesh’s laws.”
