Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin stated that preparations for voter lists and political party registrations are expected to be completed by September 2025, after which the election schedule will be announced. Additionally, officials are being instructed to prepare for elections tentatively scheduled for December next year.
In an interview with a private TV channel, the CEC emphasized that public expectations from the current government and the Election Commission are high. He dismissed concerns about disruptions to the electoral process, asserting that the commission’s commitment to free and fair elections would garner public trust.
Before receiving the Election Reform Commission’s report, work has already begun on finalizing voter lists and constituency boundaries. However, the CEC acknowledged challenges, including eliminating fake voters, adding new ones, and resolving boundary disputes. Verifying party registrations also remains a complex task.
The CEC highlighted the importance of removing deceased voters from the rolls and ensuring an accurate voter database, describing it as a significant challenge. However, he assured that efforts are ongoing to address these issues.
He also noted a shift in the role of law enforcement and administrative officials, stating they are now free from undue pressure to favor any party during elections, unlike in previous instances.
The CEC hinted at significant changes before the elections, emphasizing that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure credibility. Reforms proposed by the Election Reform Commission will also be implemented to strengthen the commission.
Notably, Bangladesh’s controversial 12th parliamentary elections were held on January 7 this year. Seven months later, student and public uprisings forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee the country. An interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus was formed in August, followed by the establishment of the Election Commission on November 21.
