National Citizen’s Party (NCP) chief organizer for the southern region, Hasnat Abdullah, stated that with genuine intent from the government and consensus among political parties, it would be possible to implement reforms and ensure justice by February.
He made this remark on Tuesday (26 August) while attending a special photo exhibition organized by the human rights group Mayer Dak at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka.
Abdullah emphasized the need for a clear roadmap to complete both reforms and justice. He said that state forces had been used for years to suppress the opposition, but after August 5, such practices should not be repeated. “We are not targeting state institutions; we seek their reform. Individuals can be indemnified, but institutions must be restructured,” he noted.
On the upcoming elections, Abdullah clarified his party’s position: “NCP is often portrayed as anti-election, which is not true. We have no objection to the election date — it could even be tomorrow. Our focus is on ensuring a concrete framework for reform and justice. If the will is there and political parties remain united, both can be achieved within February.”
He also criticized the government, alleging that the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances was not being allowed to function independently.
