Election Commission to Reveal Roadmap for 2026 General Election
The Election Commission (EC) is set to announce its plan for the upcoming general election, expected in February 2026, on Thursday, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said Wednesday.
“We are ready to share the action plan we have prepared… it is on my desk now. Please wait until tomorrow,” he told reporters during a briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.
The EC secretary added that more details would be provided to the media on Thursday. “Inshallah, I will share additional information then. Until that time, please be patient,” he said.
According to officials, the roadmap will outline key preparatory steps, including political party registration, redrawing of parliamentary constituencies, reforms to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), updating electoral rules, implementing IT-based voter registration, establishing a postal ballot system for overseas voters, and procuring essential election materials.
On 14 August, Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the plan would offer a clear picture of the commission’s preparations and include timelines for major electoral tasks. It will also detail schedules for consultations with civil society representatives and journalists, as well as deadlines for proposed amendments and reforms to electoral laws.
Earlier this month, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin indicated that the national election is likely to be held in the first half of February 2026, and confirmed that the EC has stepped up preparations nationwide.
