Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has described the Election Commission’s (EC) recently announced action plan or roadmap as “immature,” “partial,” and “somewhat misleading.” The party’s Secretary General, Mia Golam Parwar, expressed this view in a press release sent to media outlets on Thursday night around 8:30 pm.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, the EC unveiled its roadmap for the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Mia Golam Parwar criticized the roadmap as conventional, saying that while the nation expects the next general election in February to be free, fair, and credible, the procedure for conducting the election has not yet been finalized. He added that the legal foundation for the July Charter and the process for its implementation are also still incomplete. Given this context, he argued, the roadmap is premature and partial, and it does not reflect public expectations.

He further said: “To restore democracy in line with the spirit of the July movement, the July Charter should have been given legal recognition and its implementation process finalized before announcing the roadmap.”

The EC’s roadmap outlines a tentative timeline for completing key preparatory tasks ahead of the next parliamentary election. It covers 24 areas, including stakeholder consultations, finalizing the voter list, reforming election laws, registering new political parties, and finalizing constituency boundaries.

While the roadmap has been welcomed by the BNP, the National Citizen’s Party (NCP) argued that moving toward elections without securing the legal and constitutional foundation of the July Charter amounts to breaking previous government commitments.
