Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), recently attended a reception at Senakunja organized by the Armed Forces Division. This marked her first public appearance since 2018 and her first visit to the event in over a decade. Sitting beside Interim Government Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, she shared moments that captured the attention of many on social media.
One poignant observation came from Dr. Rumi Ahmed, a professor at Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin. Sharing his insights on social media, later reposted by Dr. Asif Nazrul, he discussed the miraculous nature of her recovery given her critical medical history.
Dr. Ahmed detailed how, only months ago, Khaleda Zia endured severe health crises, including liver failure, kidney failure, and advanced rheumatoid arthritis. She required ICU care for seven months, during which complications such as fluid buildup in her lungs and abdomen necessitated constant draining. Despite her frailty, her recent ability to engage in public activities without supplemental oxygen or visible distress was described as nothing short of miraculous.
Yet, the visible toll on her body remains. Dr. Ahmed noted the deformities in her hands—classic signs of untreated advanced rheumatoid arthritis. He highlighted how such conditions are now rare due to modern treatments, emphasizing that her time in incarceration deprived her of adequate medical care. He also mentioned the profound tragedies her family faced, which further compounded her struggles.
In conclusion, while some advocate for Khaleda Zia’s transfer abroad for medical care, Dr. Ahmed believes her current medical team in Bangladesh is capable of addressing her needs. However, he stresses the importance of ensuring her remaining years are spent in peace and dignity.
Her appearance not only underscored her resilience but also reignited conversations about the challenges she and her family have endured over the years.
