Content creator Tawhid Afridi, who was arrested in connection with a murder case, sought bail from a Dhaka court on Saturday, citing a recent kidney surgery and ongoing health concerns.
Afridi, 25, told the court, “I underwent a kidney operation four months ago and require insulin. My wife is seven months pregnant. I request that bail be granted.”
The plea was made before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias, who assured Afridi that all necessary arrangements for his treatment would be provided. Despite this, the court ultimately rejected the bail request and ordered that he be sent to jail.
Afridi appeared in court after completing a five-day remand and interrogation. CID police Inspector Khan Md Erfan, the investigating officer, recommended that he remain in custody. Afridi was brought to the courtroom around noon wearing a mask, helmet, handcuffs, and a bulletproof vest.
His lawyer, Mohammad Khairul Islam, argued that there were no specific allegations against Afridi. He noted that the plaintiff had submitted an affidavit on November 11 of the previous year, acknowledging factual errors that had implicated Afridi. Islam requested bail, exemption, or acquittal on behalf of his client, citing Afridi’s health condition.
Prosecutor Kaiyum Hossain Noyon opposed the petition, emphasizing the seriousness of the murder case.
Afridi was arrested in Barisal by CID police on Sunday night, after which the court approved a five-day remand for further investigation.
The case relates to the killing of Md Asadul Haque Babu on August 24 last year during the July Uprising in Jatrabari. A murder complaint was filed by the victim’s father on August 30, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 25 others, and Afridi’s father, Mytv Chairman Nasir Uddin Sathi, as accused. Sathi was arrested on August 17 and subsequently sent to jail.
