This winter season’s lowest temperature was recorded today, Tuesday. According to the Meteorological Department, the previous seasonal low was 7.5°C, recorded in Gopalganj on December 31. Today, the temperature dropped further to 7°C, which was recorded in Rajshahi in the northern part of the country.
Along with Rajshahi, a cold wave is currently affecting 10 districts. While the lowest temperature nationwide has fallen, the temperature in the capital has risen slightly today.
Meteorologist Md Omar Faruk from the Meteorological Department said that the 7°C recorded in Rajshahi is the lowest temperature of the current winter. He added that temperatures may fluctuate over the next three to four days, but a gradual rise is expected around January 10 or 11.
The districts experiencing the cold wave today are Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Panchagarh, Rangamati, Jashore, Kushtia and Chuadanga.
According to meteorological classifications, a mild cold wave occurs when temperatures range between 8.1°C and 10°C. Temperatures between 6.1°C and 8°C are considered a moderate cold wave, while 4.1°C to 6°C is classified as a severe cold wave. When temperatures fall below 4°C, it is termed an extreme cold wave.
In its long-range forecast released earlier this month, the Meteorological Department said that at least five cold waves may pass over the country in January, including the possibility of one severe cold wave.
