Prison Sentences for Hasina, Joy and Putul in Plot-Allocation Corruption Cases
In Dhaka’s Purbachal New Town project, three separate corruption cases involving plot allocation by RAJUK have resulted in jail terms and fines for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and her daughter Saima Wazed Putul.
Sheikh Hasina received 21 years in prison—7 years in each of the three cases—along with fines totaling 300,000 taka. Failure to pay would add 18 years of additional imprisonment.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy was sentenced to 5 years in prison, plus a 100,000-taka fine. Non-payment carries 6 months of additional jail time.
Saima Wazed Putul also received 5 years in prison and a 100,000-taka fine, with 6 months’ extra jail time if unpaid.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday by Judge Md Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-5. Arguments concluded on 23 November before the court scheduled the verdict for 27 November.
Across the three cases, 47 people were charged, representing 22 individuals since some were named in multiple cases.
Among the accused, government officer Md Saiful Islam Sarkar was the only one fully acquitted in all three cases due to lack of conclusive evidence.
Former RAJUK member (Estate & Land) Mohammad Khurshid Alam—the only accused currently in custody—received three years in total (one year per case), plus fines amounting to 15,000 taka.
Other high-profile convictions include:
Sharif Ahmed, former state minister for housing and public works: 18 years (6 years in each case) + 300,000 taka fine
Md Shahid Ullah Khandaker, former housing secretary: 18 years + 300,000 taka fine
Kazi Wasi Uddin, former additional secretary: 18 years + 300,000 taka fine
Md Anisur Rahman Mia, former RAJUK chairman: 15 years + 150,000 taka fine
Mohammad Salah Uddin, former PM’s personal secretary: 12 years + 200,000 taka fine
Several former RAJUK members, directors, and ministry officials also received sentences ranging from 1 to 9 years, depending on the case.
Earlier this year, the Anti-Corruption Commission had filed six separate cases over alleged irregularities in RAJUK plot allocation. Three of those cases reached a verdict today.
