Leaders and activists of the BNP have been gathering in front of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia is undergoing treatment. Supporters from different parts of the country were seen crowding the area late Sunday morning.
Shahadat Hossain, former senior joint secretary of North Khan Thana BNP, said he came despite instructions not to gather. “I came to know how she is doing. They told us not to come, but the heart doesn’t listen. Affection brings us here,” he said.
Around 10:30 a.m., Gazipur district BNP convener A.K.M. Fazlul Haque Milon spoke to the media after coming out of the hospital. He said only doctors could confirm details about Khaleda Zia’s condition and urged everyone to pray for her recovery.
Former Singra Upazila chairman Abidur Rahman Khan Roman also came to show support. He said their only wish was for Khaleda Zia to recover and return to the nation. He added that even though he entered the hospital, he was not allowed to meet her as only medical personnel are granted access.
Another BNP leader from Manikganj urged people not to believe rumors spreading on social media.
Standing outside the hospital, Asifuzzaman Asif, vice president of Tangail Thana BNP, said he was praying for her well-being. “I heard she spoke this morning. That made me feel relieved,” he added.
Khaleda Zia, 80, has long suffered from multiple chronic health issues including cardiac complications, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney problems. She was rushed to the hospital last Sunday after experiencing breathing difficulties and is now under treatment in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU). A medical board consisting of both local and foreign specialists is overseeing her care. BNP leaders earlier described her condition as extremely critical.
According to sources, her condition showed slight improvement on Saturday compared to the previous days, although the overall situation remains fragile. Her kidney function has severely deteriorated, requiring continuous dialysis for four days.
Doctors say the coming days are crucial, as sustained improvement will be difficult without stabilization of kidney activity.
Supporters continue to gather outside Evercare Hospital, some even holding prayer gatherings with banners, which has caused traffic congestion in the area. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged party workers not to crowd the location.
