Political Controversy Surrounds Committee Formation at Cumilla Modern High School

The recently formed managing committee of Cumilla Modern High School, under the Cumilla Education Board, has sparked widespread criticism and debate due to the controversial political backgrounds of several appointees. The issue has quickly become a major topic of discussion at the local level.

The most significant criticism centers on the appointment of Nizam Uddin Kaisar, a former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader who was expelled from the party. He has reportedly been appointed as the President of the school’s managing committee. Kaisar was removed from BNP after repeatedly defying party decisions and contesting mayoral elections independently. His appointment to such a key position has raised serious questions about the decision-making process.

Another controversial inclusion is Md. Salauddin, who has been nominated as the teacher representative. According to local sources, he is an active member of Jamaat-e-Islami. Critics argue that appointing someone with a clear political affiliation in a representative role within an educational institution could compromise its neutrality.

The appointment of Jalal Uddin Khan (Badal) as a guardian representative has also drawn criticism. He is widely regarded as being affiliated with the Awami League. Observers claim that the committee lacks political balance and allege that the selection process has been one-sided.

So far, the district administration has not provided any official explanation regarding these appointments, further fueling public concern and speculation.

In addition, allegations have surfaced against technocrat Agriculture Minister Hajee Yasin. It is claimed that he has been influencing various administrative offices in Cumilla in support of his brother-in-law, Nizam Uddin Kaisar. Reports suggest that Kaisar has participated in meetings at key institutions, including the district administration, city corporation, and even correctional facilities. Local BNP leaders argue that such actions may threaten administrative neutrality and good governance.

Meanwhile, dissatisfaction is growing among grassroots BNP activists. They claim that many long-time party members—who have faced political repression—have been overlooked, while controversial individuals have been given priority.

In response to the situation, members of Cumilla’s civil society are demanding transparency and accountability. They emphasize that appointments to the managing committee of an important educational institution like Cumilla Modern High School should be based on merit, neutrality, and public acceptability.
