Nasiruddin Patwari, Chief Coordinator of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), has declared that the country’s national elections will not take place in February as planned.
He made the statement on Tuesday (12 August) while addressing the National Youth Conference, organized by the party’s youth wing, Jatiya Jubo Shokti, to mark International Youth Day.
“I am announcing — there will be no election in February. If there is, then those brothers of mine who sacrificed their lives and shed blood for reforms and a new constitution… we would have to return their bodies to their graves,” Patwari said.
He accused media editors of repeatedly deceiving the people of Bangladesh and claimed that the “July warriors” are being criminalized.
Patwari further said that the downfall of Bangabhaban would come through student activism, adding that there is no place in Bangladesh for either the Awami League or the Jatiya Party.
Addressing the Chief Adviser, he said Sheikh Hasina must be brought from India to face trial before any election date is announced.
The interim government has been preparing for the 13th national parliamentary elections, tentatively set for the first half of February next year. The Election Commission has also been making arrangements with this timeline in mind, a schedule welcomed by several political parties including the BNP.
