Muhammad Ayakub, general secretary of the Jamuna Oil Company Labour Union, has been sent to jail following his arrest in a case over attacks on students during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Police detained him early Sunday morning and later produced him before a court, which ordered his incarceration.

Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahedul Kabir confirmed the matter, saying Ayakub was arrested in connection with a case filed over incidents linked to the July movement last September. The court subsequently remanded him to jail.

Ayakub is a well-known employee of the state-owned Jamuna Oil Company. He joined the company in 1997 as a typist after his father, Md Abdul Kashem—an office assistant at the firm—passed away. In 2009, Ayakub became joint general secretary of the labour union and was promoted to general secretary a year later, a position he has held since. For over a decade, the union was affiliated with the Jubo League; following last year’s political shift, it was aligned with the Jubo Dal.

Company sources say Ayakub’s basic salary was Tk 935 when his job became permanent in 1997. It has since risen to Tk 37,503, with his total monthly pay now around Tk 85,100. Despite this, he lives in a 4,000-square-foot apartment in the upscale Khulshi area of Chattogram, owns a microbus, and has investments—both declared and undeclared—in various businesses.

Jamuna Oil sources also report that in 2014 Ayakub purchased six decimals of land in Patenga for Tk 2.1 million. His wife, Mariam Begum, jointly bought four decimals of land in Agrabad for Tk 5 million. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says preliminary inquiries have uncovered additional assets, including multiple plots of land in Boalkhali and a 4,200-square-foot apartment in Khulshi’s Dampra area, valued at Tk 17 million in official documents.
