The Government of Bangladesh has formally conveyed strong concern to the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pranay Verma, by summoning him to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
According to an official statement issued by the ministry, the High Commissioner was called in at 10:00 am and met Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam. This marked the second time within the past ten days that the Indian envoy was summoned. Since the interim government took office, the Indian High Commissioner has been called to the ministry on at least six occasions over various issues.
During the meeting, Bangladesh expressed its serious concern over incidents that occurred outside the Bangladesh High Commission and the residence of the High Commissioner in New Delhi on December 20. The government also raised objections to acts of vandalism carried out by extremist groups at a Bangladesh visa centre in Siliguri on December 22.
The ministry noted that Bangladesh is deeply worried about violent demonstrations that have taken place near its diplomatic missions in different parts of India. Such incidents were described as deliberate and unacceptable.
In its statement, Bangladesh strongly condemned any planned violence or threatening activities directed at diplomatic facilities. It said these actions not only put the safety of diplomatic personnel at risk but also undermine the principles of mutual respect, peace, and tolerance between the two countries.
Bangladesh urged the Indian government to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents and to take all necessary steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The government also called on India to ensure adequate security for Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions and related institutions within its territory.
The statement concluded by expressing Bangladesh’s expectation that India will act promptly, in line with its international diplomatic obligations, to safeguard the dignity and security of diplomatic personnel and premises.
