Jamaat-e-Islami’s legal counsel, Advocate Shishir Monir, has urged party members not to lose hope over the unresolved issue of the party’s registration and electoral symbol. Expressing optimism, he said the legal process for regaining both is nearing its conclusion. He also noted that the fate of senior leader ATM Azharul Islam’s release is expected to be determined later this month.
As the country’s political parties prepare for the upcoming elections, Jamaat has reportedly finalized candidates in nearly 300 constituencies, despite the unresolved status of its registration at the Supreme Court. Party insiders acknowledge growing frustration among grassroots members, especially in the wake of last year’s mass uprising that brought political momentum.
Advocate Shishir Monir emphasized that while delays in the legal proceedings are expected, they should not lead to despair. He added that after August 5, top leaders of other parties have been released through legal means, but Azharul Islam remains incarcerated for over a decade, which is a matter of concern for many.
According to him, the legal steps regarding Azharul’s release are complete and now await a final hearing. The Supreme Court will resume its judicial activities on Sunday, but the Chief Justice will be abroad from April 23 to 30. A final verdict on both the registration and Azhar’s case is anticipated once the court reconvenes.
