Nahid Islam, the convenor of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), called for the formation of anti-fascist platforms in every neighborhood with the aim of banning the Awami League. Speaking at a protest held on Friday (April 2) in front of the south gate of Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka, he urged the people to spread the NCP’s message door to door and take the lead in holding the ruling party accountable for what he termed decades of authoritarianism and crimes against the people.
He claimed that the government had failed to deliver justice for the July uprising and other past atrocities, and warned that if state institutions failed, the people’s court would hold the Awami League accountable. Drawing on historical examples, he referenced the betrayal of the ideals of 1947 and 1971, and accused the post-1972 regime of subjugating the nation to foreign influence under a so-called Mujibist constitution. He also condemned the BAKSAL system as a betrayal of democracy.
Nahid criticized the continued absence of justice for events like the 2009 Pilkhana massacre and the 2013 Shapla Chattar crackdown. He claimed that the interim government had failed to honor the martyrs of the July uprising and accused it of participating in a collective failure.
He alleged that the political space was being manipulated through cases and the rehabilitation of Awami League figures in various parties. “Those questioning whether Hasina is a killer aren’t journalists—they’re collaborators of fascism,” he stated.
Calling for immediate action, he demanded the cancellation of the Awami League’s registration and a legal ban on its activities until justice is served. He also proposed the declaration of a ‘July Charter’ to be established through political consensus, which would call for a new constitution drafted by a constituent assembly. “One day, Dhaka will lead South Asia,” he concluded.
