Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh is holding a grand rally at Dhaka’s historic Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday (May 3), demanding justice for the 2013 Shapla Chattar crackdown, accountability for enforced disappearances and killings during the Awami League era, and pressing four major demands. The rally officially began at 9 a.m. and is scheduled to continue until 1 p.m., but leaders and activists started gathering at dawn, quickly filling the venue to capacity. According to Hefazat leaders, hundreds of thousands have joined the rally from across the country, including more than 50,000 participants from Chattogram alone. The four demands include: the cancellation of the Women’s Reform Commission’s report which they claim contradicts the Quran and Sunnah, the reinstatement of complete faith and trust in Allah in the Constitution, withdrawal of all politically motivated cases filed under the current regime, and justice for all killings including the May 5, 2013 Shapla Chattar incident, as well as an end to the persecution of Muslims in Palestine and India.
