Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, the Dhaka South Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami, voiced a strong demand on Friday morning (May 9) for the immediate banning of the Awami League, aligning himself with the call of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP). Speaking in front of the interim chief advisor’s residence in Jamuna during an ongoing protest, Dr. Masud stated that the student-led citizens’ movement, which empowered the interim government, now demands the disbanding of the Awami League. He urged the government to summon all political parties before noon to officially declare the party illegal. Citing thousands of deaths under the Awami League’s rule in recent years, he described this demand as a unified call from patriotic citizens, not limited to any single group. Expressing frustration that some forces were still trying to suppress this democratic demand, he referenced the bravery of protesters who had previously stood against bullets to secure victory, asserting that the people would not return home without a similar success this time. Dr. Masud emphasized that their presence wasn’t as a political faction but as representatives of 180 million people demanding justice. Since Thursday night at 10 p.m., demonstrators have remained stationed outside the Jamuna residence, with leaders from the NCP including Nahid Islam and Nasiruddin Patwari also present. By Friday morning, hundreds of NCP supporters continued protesting, chanting slogans for the banning of the Awami League. The movement has also received expressions of solidarity from Jamaat-e-Islami, Inqilab Manch, Islami Andolon, AB Party, and other opposition groups.
