The High Court has scheduled Thursday, May 22, for the hearing of an appeal filed by Dr. Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, against a three-year prison sentence in a corruption case. The date was set by a single bench led by Justice Khasruzzaman. Earlier, the court granted her bail pending the disposal of the appeal.
In August 2023, a court sentenced Tarique Rahman to nine years and Dr. Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison over a case involving undisclosed assets. Following the August 5 verdict, the government suspended Dr. Rahman’s sentence for one year under conditions tied to her appeal. She returned to the country on May 6 after 17 years, accompanying Begum Khaleda Zia.
According to her lawyers, the charges and convictions were politically motivated, aimed at sidelining the Zia family from politics. They express confidence that both Tarique and Zubaida will be acquitted once the appeal is heard.
