BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the meeting between the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus in London could become a turning point in the current political landscape. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday (June 10) at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Mirza Fakhrul confirmed that Tarique Rahman has been formally invited to the meeting, which is scheduled to take place on Friday (June 13) from 9 AM to 11 AM London time. The party’s standing committee has welcomed this meeting.
Mirza Fakhrul emphasized that, given the present national and international political context, the meeting holds significant importance and, if it proceeds smoothly, could positively impact the political situation and become a potential turning point. He noted that the meeting could help resolve many existing problems and open up new possibilities for political solutions, depending on how the leadership navigates the opportunities.
He further stressed the need for everyone to act responsibly to ensure the democratic journey is not disrupted, adding that national unity is essential at this time.
When asked about the BNP’s stance if the government holds elections in April, Mirza Fakhrul replied that the party has not yet made any decision on the matter but believes April is not a reasonable time for elections, and the government should reconsider.
He also dismissed the claim that BNP seeks reforms instead of elections, labeling it as baseless propaganda. Mirza Fakhrul affirmed that the BNP is a resilient party that cannot be easily dismissed or finished.
Additionally, he mentioned that the government should reduce its size before the election, and clarified that BNP has not yet held any seat-sharing discussions with the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) or Jamaat-e-Islami.
