The government is considering extending the six-month VAT exemption on metro rail tickets until June next year, following its widespread popularity since the service began.

Currently, metro rail passengers enjoy a VAT-free fare, which is set to expire on December 31 this year.

In addition, authorities have already decided to remove the Tk 5,000 excise duty on air tickets for Hajj pilgrims for both outbound and return flights starting next year.

Md Bodruzzaman Munshi, second secretary of VAT Policy at the National Board of Revenue (NBR), confirmed the updates.

He noted, “A note regarding the metro rail exemption has been sent to advisory councils for approval, while the cabinet has already approved the excise duty waiver for Hajj pilgrims.”

The Dhaka metro rail, which began commercial operations at the end of December 2022, has quickly become a favourite among commuters, particularly office workers and students, offering a smooth alternative to the city’s often chaotic bus rides.
