The International Crimes Tribunal‑1 has delivered its verdict in the July uprising case, sentencing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. Following the announcement, the family of Abu Saeed—who was killed during the uprising—expressed satisfaction with the ruling.

Speaking to reporters on Monday (17 November), Abu Saeed’s elder brother, Ramzan Ali, said, “We are relieved by the verdict. What we want now is its quick enforcement.”

Earlier in the day, the tribunal handed down its judgment in the case filed over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass movement. Sheikh Hasina received the death penalty in two of the charges brought against her.

Alongside Sheikh Hasina, the case also named two other accused: former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al‑Mamun.

According to the tribunal, the prosecution successfully proved the charges against all three. Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death on two counts, while Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also given the death penalty for one of the charges. Former IGP Al‑Mamun, who testified as an approver, was sentenced to five years in prison.

Reacting to the verdict, Abu Saeed’s father, Mokbul Hossain, said, “Announcing the judgment is not enough. Those who have been convicted must be brought back to the country and the sentence carried out without delay.”

His mother, Monowara Begum, added, “Nothing can fill the void left by my son’s death. To ensure no other mother suffers this pain, exemplary punishment must be implemented.”
