Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiya have resigned from their positions as advisors in the interim government. On Wednesday afternoon, they submitted their resignation letters to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse, Jamuna.

The resignations were formally accepted by the Chief Adviser when the advisors visited the Jamuna guesthouse to submit their letters. Their resignations will take effect immediately following the announcement of the election schedule by the Election Commission. Notably, the schedule for the 13th National Parliament elections and a national referendum is set to be announced tomorrow, Thursday, at 6 PM.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam confirmed these details in a press briefing at the Jamuna state guesthouse on Wednesday evening.

Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud had served as representatives of student leaders who led the July popular uprising, acting as advisors in the interim government. Mahfuz was responsible for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, while Asif Mahmud oversaw the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, in addition to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

During the briefing, it was stated that after accepting the resignations of these two student leaders, the Chief Adviser wished them well for the future. He said, “The nation will remember the role you played in leading the uprising and helping free the country from authoritarian rule. I am confident that you will continue to contribute actively to democratic progress and national development in the future.”

Mahfuz Alam submitted his resignation to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the Jamuna state guesthouse on Wednesday afternoon. Similarly, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiya handed in his resignation at the same venue.

The Chief Adviser described the day as historic and expressed gratitude for their contributions. “The interim government will always remember your efforts. I wish you a bright and successful future. What you have given to the nation in such a short time will never be forgotten. This is just a transition, and I hope you will make even greater contributions in the larger arena in the future,” he said.

He also encouraged the two student leaders to continue working for the country’s welfare, noting, “The experience you have gained in government service will surely benefit you in your future endeavors.”

The interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, was formed on August 8, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government during the July uprising on August 5. The advisory council had 23 members, including the Chief Adviser. Two of the student representatives have now resigned.

Previously, student leader Mohammad Nahid Islam served as an advisor but resigned on February 25 to become the convenor of the National Citizens Party (NCP), which was formed by youth leaders of the July uprising.

Mahfuz Alam initially served as a special assistant to the Chief Adviser, appointed on August 28 of last year, and later took oath as an advisor on November 10. He was assigned as Information Advisor after Nahid Islam’s resignation.

Asif Mahmud originally oversaw the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Following the passing of A.F. Hasan Arif, he was appointed to the Ministry of Local Government in November last year and subsequently managed both the Local Government and Youth & Sports ministries.
