Donald Trump said a suspect involved in a shooting during a dinner at Washington Hilton Hotel was carrying multiple weapons and appeared to be a “potential assassin.”
Speaking at a White House briefing on Saturday night, Trump said the incident happened while a White House Correspondents’ dinner event was underway, attended by him and First Lady Melania Trump. After gunshots were heard, Secret Service agents quickly moved them to safety.
Trump described the agents as “extremely brave,” saying they subdued the suspect after he attacked a security checkpoint. One officer was shot at close range but survived thanks to a bulletproof vest.
He also questioned the security of the hotel, calling it “not a very secure building,” despite its long history of hosting major political events since opening in 1965.
The suspect has been taken into custody. Trump characterized him as mentally unstable and linked the incident to past alleged attempts on his life in Pennsylvania and Florida.
