The Bangladesh Bank has issued instructions to ensure the safety of banks and their premises to prevent the loss of lives, assets, and critical documents in light of recent fire incidents across the country.

In a circular from its Banking Regulation and Policy Department (BRPD), the central bank emphasized the need to strengthen fire prevention measures in all scheduled banks, including their business centers and premises. It recommended appointing specialized teams or experts to identify and address security shortcomings. The directive urged the implementation and regular testing of smoke and heat detection systems, fire alarms, and fire suppression mechanisms to ensure effectiveness.

Banks have been instructed to install fire hydrants, sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers, organize fire drills, and conduct awareness training. The directive also stressed the importance of engaging the Fire Service and Civil Defence or expert agencies for safety surveys and following their recommendations. Special security measures must be taken for sensitive areas, such as server rooms and key IT sections, with 24/7 CCTV monitoring of critical locations in head offices and branches.

These guidelines have been sent to the managing directors and CEOs of all scheduled banks operating in Bangladesh.
